Atlex Stockyards are thrilled to welcome Tom Austin to our design and sales team. Tom is an experienced and well known Western District local, renown for hard work, integrity and good work ethics, and he will continue to be locally based, on his farm, Elfin, at Coleraine.
Tom has had an association with Atlex Stockyards for 30 years through our mutual attendance at major field days where Tom would often assist Ian Crafter in the erection or dismantling of the Atlex display yards.
Tom is looking forward to utilising his knowledge and experience to provide prompt, professional and committed service, representing Atlex Stockyards throughout Victoria and South Australia. He will be providing support to our large base of Atlex Stockyards clients and also be actively building new relationships, specialising in the on property design and supply of customised Atlex yards to make stock work quicker, easier and safer.
Tom was born and raised on a sheep grazing property near Coleraine, in south western Victoria where he continues to live, operating a small prime lamb enterprise with his wife, Pip and their three young children, Millie, Poppy and George.
Tom is well known as part of Elfinvale Kelpies for over 40 years, having started training dogs at the age of 5. He has extensive livestock experience in both sheep and cattle operations having managed his family business back in early 2000 running 40,000 head of sheep and 4000 cattle on owned and leased properties.
His long experience working with livestock has developed a good understanding of livestock behaviour including livestock flight zones, pressure points, stock flows and the importance of functional well designed yards in keeping animal and operator stress to a minimum.
Immediately after finishing school in Melbourne, Tom went to Tasmania where he jackarooed for Frank and Millie Yule at Barton before returning home to the family property. Tom took up shearing to supplement the family farm income and shore their own sheep for 10 years, shearing 5 runs a day averaging 200 sheep a day for 30 days straight.
Tom has been an active member in various farming groups in his area including the Pigeon Ponds Lifetime Ewe Management Group Pilot Programme with Darren Gordon from DEPI, Hamilton and the Wando Best Wool Group which brought like-minded young farmers together to discuss and share ideas on all areas relating to wool production.
Tom has had a long standing association with RCS (Resource Consulting Services) where he participated in both the Grazing for Profit and Executive Link Programmes, as well as participating in Budd Williams low stress stock handling course. Tom has also initiated and undertaken dog training days for Elfinvale Kelpies.
He attained a Certificate in Management of Sheep Health through RIST, and has been a regular exhibitor at Hamilton’s Sheepvention Inventions Competition, and in 2005 won the major award for best invention for the design of a sheep handling system built to improve efficiencies of throughput by enabling the drenching of over 2000 sheep per hour.
Tom has been, and remains actively involved in his local community, having played local country football with Coleraine and Harrow / Balmoral having won 4 grand finals and a league best and fairest in 2000. He also played community tennis with South Arapiles Association as well as country cricket with Hamilton College and Coleraine Cricket clubs.
Over the past 10 years Tom has been involved in a diverse range of off farm activities including sawmilling, cropping, hay contracting, and more recently road train cartage of wheat/rice and cotton in NSW.
Tom and Pip are very excited about the purchase of a new set of Atlex sheep yards at Elfin. These yards will be used as a demonstration site for Atlex Stockyards and anyone one who would like to see the yards in operation is welcome.
